GO VIRAL

Airbnb was founded in 2008 by Brian Chesky & Joe Gebbia

They started by renting out their own apartment & realised it might be a business

To improve photos of spaces, they personally went from door to door in NYC to take photos for hosts

The founders were famously rejected by Venture Capitalist Fred Wilson in New York

Airbnb became increasingly popular among travellers & hosts

Barry Manilow's drummer rents an entire house and brings publicity to Airbnb

Anita Roth is Airbnb's Head of Policy Research. She researches how Airbnb fits into cities, and the impacts and benefits that home sharing brings to communities around the world.

THE NEW STANDARD

Airbnb is being used in over 34,000 cities and 191 countries worldwide

There are over 2M spaces listed on the platform

RESPONDING TO USER TRENDS

Hurricane Sandy

Disaster Response Initiative

In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated the Caribbean and the Eastern Seaboard, leaving thousands without a home

One host listed her space for free

1,400 Airbnb hosts in New York opened doors and cooked meals for those left stranded

In 2013, Airbnb launched the Disaster Response service enabling hosts to easily help those in need when disasters strike

Paris Attacks 2015

HOW IT WORKS

Following the Paris Attacks in November 2015, over 300 Airbnb hosts opened their homes to people in danger

When disasters strike, Airbnb activates it's response tool for designated geographic areas

Hosts are automatically emailed asking them if they can help

All Airbnb bookings in the affected area are fee-free for hosts during this period

Airbnb networks are used to provide general disaster response information to guests and hosts
