Gaudenz Koeppel
Head of Models and Optimization, Axpo Trading, Zurich, Switzerland
Why you should listen
Gaudenz Koeppel and his team developed optimisation models for the management of flexible hydropower plants for Axpo Trading, the largest producer of storable and renewable hydropower in Switzerland. 60% of Switzerland’s electricity comes from hydropower.
Gaudenz is also an ETG Innovation awardee. His project “Vision of Future Energy Networks” was awarded by electrosuisse, the Swiss Association for Electrical, Energy and Information Technology. His work focused on the development of efficient energy supply concepts that guarantee both high stability and security of supply. His approach was considered a quantum leap because it did not analyse individual energy systems separately but in their entirety, thus delivering a tool that will enable a completely new operating concept in the future.
Meet Gaudenz at Worldwebforum where he is a McKinsey Breakout Session Speaker.

A key goal is to replicate the models for the trading desks across European countries despite locally different market regulations. As first use cases start creating profit and cross-divisional collaboration is increasing, the initiative is now gradually being moved into an operational setup with Data Scientists and Data Engineers in Switzerland and Spain.
Gaudenz Koeppel is also responsible for the continuous development of model-based trading approaches for the commercialisation of Axpo’s Swiss hydro power plants.
