AUGMENTED REALITY IS A MAJOR TREND RIGHT NOW WITH ALL MAJOR PLAYERS INVESTING HEAVILY IN BOTH HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TO ENABLE BOTH PROFESSIONAL AND ENTERTAINMENT APPLICATIONS. SIMON LYNEN WILL TELL US MORE ABOUT THE SPECIFIC BETS GOOGLE IS MAKING TO LEVERAGE THE TREMENDOUS CORPUS OF GEO-SPATIAL DATA AND INFORMATION TO ORGANIZE THE VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED WORLD IN ORDER TO MAKE IT UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE AND USEFUL.

BIOGRAPHY

Simon Lynen is currently Tech Lead/Manager at Google Zurich. His group focuses on providing high precision mobile-phone indoor and outdoor localization as part of the Visual Positioning Service (VPS). Consumer devices with Google’s Augmented Reality (AR) capabilities (running Google ARCore) can leverage VPS to enable location aware experiences such as indoor-navigation and large-scale AR. Simon previously pursued his PhD at the Autonomous Systems Lab at ETH Zurich with a focus on visual navigation and localization algorithms for robotics, mobile devices and autonomous cars. Such algorithms allow the user to navigate without the use of GPS signals and provide locally higher precision than existing satellite-based navigation solutions.

Simon has contributed central pieces to the algorithm core of Google’s ARCore and has been part of the project ARCore team Mountain View, CA for three years, before becoming a full-time employee of Google mid 2015. In talks at TEDx Zurich, Lift, Zurich Minds and scientific conferences Simon has provided a behind-the-scenes view of the ARCore technology, demonstrating latest technological capabilities and discussing the future roadmap for AR at city scale.
