Ueli Maurer

Member of the Swiss Federal Council, zurich, switzerland
The President of the Swiss Confederation 2019

Federal President Elect Ueli Maurer will address the attendees of WORLDWEBFORUM 2019 with the opening speech.

Mr. Maurer has been part of the Bundesrat since 2009, and his most recent position was as Switzerland’s Minster for Finance. In 2018, he attended the G20 Summit in Argentina to speak in particular in favour of open markets and against protectionism in the financial sector and reiterate the need for a solid framework for sustainable growth.

Switzerland at the G20 Summit

With regard to digitisation, Switzerland will emphasise its opportunities and the importance of observing possible risks carefully.

Furthermore, the digital economy should be taxed according to criteria that are broadly coordinated internationally and are sustainable in the long term.

In the area of financial regulation, Switzerland is generally committed to the agreed standards being implemented.

Finally, Switzerland is working for improved correspondent banking relationships.

Mr. Maurer's political aims

I fight for an independent, democratic, federal, neutral and free Switzerland and thus against EU accession. I stand up for lower taxes and for the state not finally spending more than it takes. Finally, I want a safe Switzerland: against crime, for secure jobs and security in old age.

From 1978 to 1986 Maurer was a municipal councillor of Hinwil. From 1983 to 1991 he was a member of the Cantonal Council of Zurich, in his final year as Council President. Maurer was elected to the National Council in 1991. In the same year he lost his election to the Zurich cantonal government against Moritz Leuenberger. During his tenure as President of the SVP Switzerland from 1996 to 2008, twelve new cantonal parties and 600 local sections were founded, establishing the SVP as the party with the highest number of voters in Switzerland. On 21 October 2007, Maurer ran for one of two seats in the Council of States in the Canton of Zurich, but failed in the first round of elections. In the second ballot on 25 November 2007 he lost to the Green Liberal Verena Diener.

On 26 October 2007 Maurer announced his resignation as SVP party president for March 2008. Toni Brunner was elected his successor on 1 March 2008. In mid-August 2008, Maurer was elected President of the Zurich SVP. On 27 November 2008, following the resignation of Federal Councillor Samuel Schmid, the SVP parliamentary group nominated Christoph Blocher and Ueli Maurer for the 2008 elections to the Federal Council. On 10 December 2008, Maurer was elected to the Federal Council in the third ballot with just one vote ahead of the demolition candidate Hansjörg Walter, with which the SVP Switzerland bid farewell to its “opposition”. Maurer has been head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (VPS) since 2009.
